Patrice Flesch, K.Y.T., owner, South End Yoga

Patrice began studying yoga in 1975 when she attended Integral yoga classes. Over the years she has studied many styles of yoga.

In 1998 Patrice received her certification to teach yoga through the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health. She chose this type of yoga because it is accessible to everyone.

Physical limitations are not a problem since poses may be modified to accommodate injuries or lack of flexibility.

Patrice’s goal is to have her students relax, feel good about themselves and improve their physical and mental health. Her students become stronger, more flexible and gain a greater awareness of their bodies and minds.

Since receiving her certification, Patrice has continued her education by studying almost every type of yoga. She attended Anusara classes for 2 years. Her teachings are heavily influenced by Gary Kraftsow and Viniyoga.

Patrice has been teaching yoga classes at the Boston Alzheimer’s center for eight years. She is a pioneer in this area. Patrice’s work with Alzheimer’s has been featured on Channel 5 in Boston, CNN and the Yoga Journal.

Patrice also teaches in rehabilitation centers and nursing homes within the Partners Health Care system. In addition, Patrice teaches at Farnsworth House, an apartment building for the elderly and disabled.

Dotty

Dotty Guild, K.Y.T., has been studying yoga since 1999. She has been a licensed mental health counselor since 1982 and has practiced in a variety of mental health, inner-city settings. As she began taking yoga classes she soon realized what incredible benefits are derived from yoga. She discovered emotional as well as physical changes in herself and views the practice of yoga as a non-judgmental inquiry and spiritual practice.

Dotty was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis over a year ago. She firmly believes in the restorative power of yoga along with appropriate medical care, diet and use of supplements. More importantly, this development has made her a more compassionate yoga teacher, who pays close attention to stress reduction through use of the breath, transitions from one posture to another, circulation and balance. Her intention is to provide a source of strength, flexibility and hope to all her clients while still maintaining a physical challenge to the body. Self-soothing techniques to the mind and spirit are taught to encourage a sense of totality in healing.

Her goals for her clients are to increase body/mind awareness, increase physical strength and flexibility and to have fun. Her approach is based on attention given to the individual needs of students with an emphasis on compassion and self study. Dotty received her certification from the The Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, MA. She has a strong interest in working with a broad range of people. Dotty feels extremely blessed to have found yoga for herself and looks forward to sharing its healing gifts with students of all types.

Nancy Nancy Turnquist is a certified teacher of Iyengar Yoga.  She completed a two year teacher training program with Patricia Walden with whom she continues to study and work closely.  Nancy traveled to Pune, India in 2003 to study with the Iyengar family and later spent a year teaching yoga in Spanish and studying with Jordi Martí at the Center for Iyengar Yoga in Barcelona, Spain.  Nancy had the good fortune to study again with BKS Iyengar during his visit to the United States in the Fall of 2005.  She is grateful to be a part of the lineage of this living master.

In Nancy's experience, a devotional practice of asana (postures) ignites the fire of will power, and promotes the surrender required for the realization of clarity and compassion. Her teaching is inspired by the joy and skill that arise from the practice of yoga.

The precision and rhythm of the Iyengar method make it accessible and meaningful to students of all walks of life and all levels of physical fitness and ability.

Nancy has a graduate degree in literary translation and welcomes Spanish speakers to her classes. She is currently teaching yoga in Spanish to expectant mothers.

Ana

Ana has dabbled in many martial arts, including Jeet Kune Do, Tae Kwon Do, Capoeira, and Hapkido, but ultimately found her home in Tang Soo Do. She received her first degree black belt in Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan in May 2005, and is associated with the Cornerstone School of Karate located in Salem, Connecticut. She started her training under Master Lear and Master Arbuckle, who she continues to train with.

Tang Soo Do ("Way of the Open Hand") is a classic martial art which integrates the graceful movements of Northern Chinese martial arts with the sharper techniques of Japanese karate and the centuries-old Korean Soo Bahk ("hand strike") and Tae Kyun ("foot style").

Tang Soo Do is suitable for everyone, independent of age or gender. It makes use of effective techniques rather than strength, allowing you to become closely connected to your body.

Teaching some classes is Josh Sherman who began training in Tang Soo Do in 1991 under Master McCalaster in Willimantic, CT, and earned his first degree black belt in 1998. Currently he trains in Salem, CT under Masters Bill Lear and Steve Arbuckle at the original Cornerstone School of Karate.

For more information about this martial art go to www.tsdmgk.com or contact Ana Campos at (860) 235-4760 or by e-mail at tsdboston@gmail.com

Maria

Maria Dolorico teaches pre-natal and post-partum yoga. After a few years as a community college professor in writing and literature, Maria pursued an M. Ed. in Mental Health Counseling. She has worked with clients dealing with depression and addictions, many living with AIDS or the HIV virus. She has also counseled women as they made decisions regarding their health and sexuality. Additionally, Maria is a Kripalu certified yoga instructor, with further training in pre-natal and post-natal yoga.

Maria's interest in women and their adjustment to motherhood began with her own journey as a mother. Like many first-time moms, she was overwhelmed by the awesome responsibility of taking care of a brand new baby, and she found great comfort in the safety net of other women experiencing motherhood for the first time. After taking time off to be a full-time mother, Maria decided that she wanted to use her clinical training as a counselor to support other women as they discover who they are as mothers. Maria's certifcation as a Post Partum Doula is pending through Doulas of North America International (DONA).

Maria lives with her husband and two daughters in one of Boston's prettiest neighborhoods. You can often find them at the park, the library, or the bookstore, with the dear friends that enrich their lives. Outside of her family, Maria sings alto with a professional choir.

For more information, call Maria at 617.869.4310 or e-mail her at Maria@AMomIsBorn.com. See Maria's website at www.AMomIsBorn.com.

Mimi Hall is a certified teacher of Bikram and Kripalu Yoga. Her yoga practice began in 2001, through a corporate workplace program at her office in San Francisco. A marketing director and runner with tightening hamstrings, she sought out yoga to improve flexibility and manage stress.  Soon tangible physical and mental benefits led her to a more consistent Iyengar-based practice with Anne Dyer at the Piedmont Studio in Oakland, CA.

Upon moving to Boston in 2004, she began practicing Bikram Yoga and two years later, left the corporate world to spent three months training with Bikram Choudhury in Los Angeles.  After teaching Bikram Yoga in Boston and Cambridge for a year, she completed a month of training at Kripalu in Lenox with Devarshi Steven Hartman and Premshakti Mary Stout.

The fusion of Bikram and Kripalu styles inform Mimi’s classes which utilize alignment and breath-work in vigorous asana, allowing students of all capabilities to go further in their practice and their lives. In addition to her Power Yoga class at South End Yoga, Mimi teaches in Downtown Boston, East Boston and Cambridge.

Linda

Linda Anna Mancini practices meditation within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition and has been the Director of the LamRim Buddhist Center for ten years. She has studied and taught with their Spiritual Director, Lama Lobsang Dorgay who was trained in Lhasa, Tibet, and is a Vajrayana master.

Linda first began mediation in a spontaneous, intuitive manner while sitting in contemplation and using a process of turning inward to simply observe thoughts. This period was followed by ten years of meditation practice in the Siddha Yoga tradition with Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. Linda's personal study of how psychology and science confirm the value of meditative practices was informed by the research of Dr. Herbert Benson who proved that mental and physical health are improved demonstrably and vividly by meditation.

Ultimately Linda found Buddhism's more than 2,500 years of evolved techniques for mind training to be the most helpful for most people. She has been honored  to learn from the Dalai Lama on many occasions. The 2003 MIT Mind & Life Institute Conference presented an astonishing array of evidence on how meditation works and, during another conference with him, she was impressed by the Dalai Lama's insistence that basic meditative techniques be made available to all people who wanted them, whether within a spiritual context or not.

"With the ever growing impact of science on our lives, religion and spirituality have a greater role to play reminding us of our humanity. There is no contradiction between the two. Each gives us valuable insights into the other. Both science and the teachings of the Buddha tell us of the fundamental unity of all things." -- The Dalai Lama

As an artist, human rights activist, a cancer survivor, wife and mother, Linda is grateful for the global, ancient and modern aspects that enrich her life and finds it natural to share these treasures as a teacher.
